Layout: Membrane rolls are positioned on the roof with appropriate overlap at seams (typically 6 inches for side seams, 12 inches for end seams).

Attachment: Depending on the method, membrane is adhered, mechanically fastened, or left loose for ballasting.

Seam welding: This is the critical step. Using a hot-air welding machine, the overlapping membrane edges are heated and pressed together. The goal is complete fusion without burning or distorting the material.

Detail Work

The field membrane is just part of the job. Detail work at edges, penetrations, and equipment often determines long-term performance:

Flashings: Custom-fabricated or pre-formed TPO pieces seal the roof at walls, curbs, and penetrations. These are welded to the field membrane for a watertight connection.

Edge metal: Metal termination bars and edge flashings secure the membrane at perimeters and provide a finished appearance.

Penetration boots: Pre-formed or field-fabricated boots seal around pipes, conduits, and other roof penetrations.

Equipment curbs: HVAC units and other equipment sit on raised curbs that are flashed into the roofing system.
